Hazards follow the phase

For your subcontractor crews, use this guidance with the current work phase, trade responsibilities and approved procedures in view. Keep your safety manager involved in record reviews and follow-up. This guidance supports record keeping and coordination, not technical authorization to carry out the work.

Excavation, lifting, work at height and hot work peak at different points in a build. Plans written for groundworks will not cover the risks of a busy fit-out with many trades in the same space.

Review at each transition

Treat the start of each phase as a planned review point.

  • Retire pre-task plans for work that has finished
  • Write or update plans for the new activities
  • Adjust inspection checklists to the new conditions
  • Check which permits will be needed and who issues them

Bring the trades in

The crews starting the new phase know their own work best. Involving their leads in the review produces plans people recognise and actually follow.

The takeaway

Make phase changes a scheduled safety review. Plans, inspections and permits should move with the work.
