Changing construction chemicals: an SDS review checklist
Check the actual sealant, coating or cleaning product your crews use before updating your SDS and task plan. Similar trade names or uses do not establish that the existing documents remain suitable for a replacement product.

A replacement product changes the planning question
A new sealant, coating or cleaning product may have different hazards from the product it replaces. Similar trade names or uses do not establish that the existing safety data sheet and task plan remain suitable. Identify the actual product before updating the project record.
Match the SDS to the delivered material
Obtain the relevant safety data sheet from the supplier and compare its product identity with the container on site. Have the competent reviewer assess storage, handling and the proposed construction task against applicable requirements. An upload date alone does not establish that the document is suitable.
Connect the change to the trade crew
Review whether task steps, access arrangements, nearby work or required controls need to change. Brief affected trade leads through the project’s approved process. Keep the revised chemical record and reviewed task information available to the crew.
Check the next delivery
Imagine a fit-out crew receives a replacement coating. Record the change rather than assuming the earlier plan applies. The responsible reviewer decides what must be checked before use and who confirms that the project information has been updated.
- Exact product and supplier
- Matching SDS and competent review
- Affected task plans and trade crews
- Outstanding questions and named owners
The takeaway
Keep construction context, records and responsibility together. Have competent people review the work and confirm the follow-up before relying on a status.
